How Dental Implants Replace Your Missing Teeth
For many patients, the dental implants process involves two surgical procedures. During the first visit, your new implants will be placed. The implants themselves are tiny titanium posts that are inserted surgically into your jawbone. For the first 3-6 months after your surgery, the implants will be beneath the surface of your gums gradually bonding with your jawbone, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth. You should be able to wear temporary dentures and eat a soft diet during this time while your dentist creates your replacement teeth. Once the implants have bonded to your jawbone, Dr. Forfar will attach small posts, which will act as metal anchors, or tooth root substitutes. Although these posts protrude through your gums, once your artificial teeth are placed, they won’t be seen.

Dental implants help preserve facial structure, preventing the bone deterioration that normally occurs when teeth are missing. The entire dental implant procedure usually takes about 6-8 months, and most patients experience minimal disruption to their daily routine.
