Oral Pathology Specialists in the Schaumburg Area
At Associates for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, we specialize in oral and maxillofacial pathology, or the study and diagnosis of many types of diseases affecting the mouth, jaws, face, and related structures. These types of issues are generally evaluated and diagnosed using microscopic evaluations and biopsies. One of the most serious types of oral pathology is oral cancer. That’s why we stress the importance of oral cancer screenings to our patients in the Schaumburg, Wheaton, and Downers Grove areas. Your mouth is one of your body’s most important warning systems when things are amiss. As such, you should never ignore any suspicious lumps or sores inside your mouth or around your facial region.
The Most Common Warning Signs for Oral Cancer
The inside of your mouth is normally lined with a special type of skin called mucosa that’s smooth and coral pink in color. Any alteration in this appearance could be indicative of a pathological process, including oral cancer. The most common warning signs for oral cancer include:
- Reddish patches (erythroplasia) or whitish patches (leukoplakia) inside your mouth
- A sore that fails to heal or bleeds easily
- A lump or thickening of the skin lining the inside of your mouth
- Chronic sore throat or hoarseness
- Difficulty chewing or swallowing
Pain Doesn’t Always Occur with Oral Pathologies
Any changes detected in your lips, cheeks, palate, and gum tissue around your teeth, tongue, face, and/or neck should be evaluated by a specialist in oral pathology immediately. It should be noted that pain doesn’t always occur with oral pathologies. In fact, pain is rarely associated with oral cancer. However, any patient with facial and/or oral pain without an obvious cause or reason may also be at risk for oral cancer. At Associates for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, we recommend that our patients perform oral cancer self-examinations monthly and pay our Schaumburg, Wheaton, or Downers Grove office a visit if we may be of assistance in oral cancer screenings.
